Custom Cabinets – Things you should know

DSC_0092

When it comes to building a home, knowing where to start on choosing important details like cabinets can be a challenge because there are so many options in styles, quality and price range. The best place to start is by asking your designer or builder for recommendations and reading informative articles like this one on Houzz.com by Laura Gaskill.

When looking for cabinets you’ll love, I always recommend keeping in mind the way you will live and work in the space, as it is extremely important that your cabinets work for your lifestyle. Another thing to consider is the style of your cabinets, many period style home owners prefer to choose cabinets that are traditional to the style of the home however others prefer a more modern style. Just remember that if you are going to use an ultra modern cabinet style in a period home then you will probably want to carry some of the modern style features through out your home as to not have the modern cabinets feel out-of-place.

It is very helpful and I highly recommend having a design or idea book with pictures of cabinets you would like in your home as this will help keep you and your cabinet designer focused on the function and style you will love.

What Are Pre-Drawn House Plans?

Pre-drawn house plans also known as pre-designed house plans or stock plans, are construction documents created by a professional residential designer or architect to build a house. Many of the pre-drawn house plans that are for sale today are designed by leading design professionals often with decades of experience in designing residential homes.

These designers recognize the challenges and nuances of home design and strive to develop floor plans that use space effectively with exceptional functionality.  The designers at Period Style Homes Plans Sales specialize in another very important aspect of home design which is aesthetics and curb appeal. Our designers understand that environment matters, that what is surrounding you really does have an effect on your happiness. So, we strive to go beyond functionality and by applying the timeless design principles of antiquity, our house plans allow you to experience the unity, harmony and beauty that comes with a well designed period or classical home.

When you buy pre-drawn house plans you are usually receiving an accurate and complete set of construction documents. Some designers sell design drawings as well. Design drawings usually do not include the structural drawing that you will need to build the home so the drawings need to be completed by a competent residential designer, architect or engineer.

At Period Style Homes Plan Sales we sell construction documents however we do have what we call “on the boards” designs that when purchased must be completed into construction documents by the residential designer or architect. This means that if you buy an “on the boards” designs it is will take longer for the plans to be shipped or emailed.

Is the rumor about Bud Lawrence true?

Lately I have been setting up social media and this blog for our new website in an effort to build an online presence and in doing so I have re-connected with friends and colleges that I haven’t spoken with in a while and inevitably, in our conversations, I get asked the question “Is the rumor true? Is Bud Lawrence living in Mexico?”

Well, it’s not very often that rumors are completely true but, believe it or not, this one is. He is semi-retired (well, as semi retired as Bud can be) and living in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico; one of the world’s most beautiful historic cities.

Bud and Mary Beth are truly enjoying  themselves keeping busy by doing many things including traveling; seeing the beauty that Mexico has to offer.

In addition to working on design projects and traveling, both Bud and Mary Beth are doing volunteer work for several charitable organizations. One of the organizations they volunteer for collects gently used clothing and sells the clothes for an extremely discounted price.  Bud volunteers once a week and drives people to appointments they would other wise not be able to get to.  Last summer he volunteered to help build small houses for families that were living in challenging conditions.

During the summer they come back to the U.S. to visit with family and periodically Bud comes in to work on some residential projects and land planning and TND charrettes.

Overall, they are enjoying the time they are spending in Mexico and plan on being there for a while.  Bud will continue to design residential projects of his choice and really looks forward to participating in more land planning and TND charrettes.

If you would like to connect with Bud you can comment below or e-mail him at inquiries@pshplans.com.  To keep up with what he is doing he will be posting here on our blog (see his latest post here – Join the discussion with Bud Lawrence) or follow us on one or all the social media sites below where we will be having some fun contests like – “Where in the world is Bud Lawrence?” and “What house style is this?”

We would love to hear from you.  How has your life and business changed in recent years?  Where are you now?  How are you doing? What are your hopes for the future?  Comment below and give us your update!

Join the discussion with Bud Lawrence

Hi All,

I would like to start a conversation about traditional house styles.  I invite all those interested in Traditional, Classical, Period and Vernacular house styles to chime in on the discussion.

I want to open the discussion by asking, how important is it to the housing market and the general public that a design professional get a house style correct that he or she is designing in? Does it matter, or does it not matter?
